When people ask me what I love most about living in North Scottsdale, my answer is always the same: the easy access to the outdoors.
One of my favorite places to visit is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and it's only about four minutes from my front door. Whether you're a long-time resident, visiting Scottsdale for the first time, or considering a move to the area, the Preserve is one of the best places to experience everything that makes North Scottsdale special.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a permanently protected desert preserve located in North Scottsdale, Arizona. Spanning more than 30,500 acres, it is one of the largest urban preserves in the United States and a defining feature of the North Scottsdale lifestyle.
The Preserve was created to protect the Sonoran Desert while providing residents and visitors with access to some of Arizona's most beautiful natural landscapes.
Today, it offers more than 225 miles of trails and attracts hikers, mountain bikers, runners, horseback riders, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts from across the country.
One of the biggest reasons the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is so popular is its accessibility.
Unlike many outdoor destinations that require hours of travel, North Scottsdale residents can enjoy world-class hiking and desert scenery just minutes from home.
Visitors love the Preserve for:
Stunning Sonoran Desert views
Incredible Arizona sunrises and sunsets
Hiking trails for all skill levels
Mountain biking opportunities
Horseback riding trails
Rock climbing areas
Wildlife viewing and photography
The Preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset, making it an ideal destination throughout the year.
For many visitors, the Gateway Trailhead is the perfect place to start.
Located in North Scottsdale, the Gateway Trailhead provides convenient access to some of the Preserve's most popular trails. The facilities are modern, well-maintained, and welcoming to both first-time visitors and experienced hikers.
What I love most about Gateway Trailhead is how accessible it is for everyone. Whether you're looking for a casual walk, a family-friendly hike, or a more challenging adventure, you'll find a trail that fits your goals.
The trailhead also offers some of the most impressive views you'll find anywhere in Scottsdale.
Absolutely.
One of the best aspects of the Preserve is that it offers trails for all ages and experience levels. Some paths are paved and relatively easy, while others provide more advanced terrain for experienced hikers and mountain bikers.
Families, retirees, fitness enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers can all find something to enjoy.
For many homebuyers, proximity to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is one of the biggest reasons they choose North Scottsdale.
Communities such as DC Ranch, Silverleaf, Troon North, Grayhawk, Desert Mountain, and Pinnacle Peak offer convenient access to hiking trails, mountain views, and the outdoor lifestyle that makes Scottsdale so unique.
Many residents begin their mornings with a hike before work or spend weekends exploring new trails with family and friends.
The Preserve isn't just a place to visit—it's part of everyday life in North Scottsdale.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is more than just a hiking destination. It's a perfect example of why so many people choose to call North Scottsdale home.
From breathtaking desert landscapes and outdoor recreation to luxury communities and an unmatched quality of life, the Preserve showcases the lifestyle that attracts buyers from across Arizona and around the country.
One of the best parts of my job is helping people discover not just the right home, but the right lifestyle.
